Single-use plastics must be banned everywhere on the planet, according to a specialist from Greenpeace Canada.

Several leaders from 160 countries are currently in Ottawa for a summit on plastic pollution to find solutions and reach an agreement.

“We need to have a global agreement,” thinks Patrick Bonin, head of the Climate-Energy campaign.

All countries must agree on “a target [à avoir] for reduction at the global level,” he adds.

As a reminder, the production of plastic and waste is expected to triple by 2060, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

If we increase the production of plastic in the world, we are going “toward a wall,” says Mr. Bonin.

Crusade for plastic straws

Some politicians in the Conservative Party of Canada want to reauthorize the single use of plastic straws.

“It’s going back to the past,” says Patrick Bonin.

He considers this plastic production “useless”.

“There are alternatives,” concludes the specialist.
