A painting by one of the greatest representatives of abstract art is being put up for sale tomorrow by the Piguet Hôtel des ventes. It is a masterpiece by the painter Hans Hartung, created in 1948.

Born in 1904 in Germany, Hans Hartung is considered one of the fathers of abstract art. The artist’s painting auctioned Tuesday evening is unusual in its composition. Elements that are a priori not very harmonious, even in “contradiction”, analyzes Pascal Alioth, specialist in the paintings department at Piguet Hôtel des ventes. “We have large bright flat areas of color with a dynamic, powerful black line that crosses the work. Hans Hartung has achieved the feat of giving the painting a magnificent harmony.”

Its price is estimated at between 700,000 and 900,000 francs.

A fierce opponent of Nazism, Hans Hartung left Germany to take refuge in , where he joined the French Foreign Legion to fight. He lost a leg in combat and emerged from the war wounded. From then on, his abundant work opened up a new path. He created a new pictorial language.

“This work is at a turning point in post-war pictorial research on abstraction with a certain experimentation on colors and forms, explains Bernard Piguet, director and auctioneer at Piguet Hôtel des ventes. Hans Hartung has managed to achieve what he wanted with this work. And in comparison with his other paintings, we can see that this is one of these masterpieces,” he concludes.

Hans Hartung’s painting is being auctioned tomorrow by the Piguet Hôtel des ventes. Its price is estimated at between 700,000 and 900,000 francs.
