On Tuesday morning, a 22-year-old soldier was killed by a gunshot in Bremgarten (AG). The soldier was sitting in a military transport truck when a projectile hit him in the head. After first aid, he was taken by helicopter to hospital, where he died in the morning. We still do not know exactly from which weapon the shot was fired and military justice is investigating the exact circumstances of this accident.

Comrades and family mourn the young soldier. An altar was erected in his honor in the barracks. According to the deceased’s father, the family has no grudge against the army. “He loved the military and he had wonderful comrades,” he wrote. The man is certain that if his son had been a reckless soldier, no altar would have been erected in his memory. On Wednesday, the soldier’s twin brother posted a video on TikTok with the following description: “He died because some people didn’t have enough discipline and focus… RIP brother.” Internet users expressed great sympathy in the comments of this video.

After the tragedy, Federal Councilor and Minister of Defense Viola Amherd said she was deeply saddened by the accidental death of the young soldier. She said the army is constantly trying to improve security measures at sites but unfortunate cases can still happen. Marc Baumann, security and weapons expert, told the Aargauer Zeitung: “Accidents happen when there is no discipline.” According to him, professional military personnel must be better trained. And every soldier must learn “what it means to carry a weapon.” He calls for individual responsibility.
