Five people died while trying to cross the Channel on the night of Monday April 22 to Tuesday April 23 off the coast of Wimereux.

New drama in the Channel. At least five migrants, including a child, died while trying to reach England off the coast of Wimereux (Pas-de-) on Tuesday April 23 in the morning, around 5:30 a.m., BFM Grand Littoral learned from the mayor of Wimereux, confirming information from La Voix du .

A major emergency response system was deployed. In all, 48 people were rescued on the Abeille Flandre ship according to the mayor and rescue workers are still looking for a boat. Wimereux beach is closed.

This is not the first time that Wimereux has been affected by a tragedy since the start of 2024. Five people have already died off the coast of the town on the night of Saturday January 13 to Sunday January 14, while they were trying to join a boat to cross the sea and go to the United Kingdom.

Around 36,000 people attempted to reach England from by crossing the Channel illegally in 2023, a figure down sharply year-on-year compared to the previous year’s record.
