Weather report. Dust from the Sahara to Grenoble carried by violent winds to Isère

Since this morning, Grenoble seems to be stuck in a thick fog. Indeed, violent winds coming from the North African coasts lift the sand of the Sahara until it forms a cloud of dust in the Grenoble metropolitan area. This cloud therefore crossed the Mediterranean, before arriving in France.

“This phenomenon is actually quite common and can occur several times a year,” explains Denis Roy, head of Météo France for the Northern Alps. The last one was about a fortnight ago. On the other hand, it was not of an intensity equivalent to what we can observe this Friday. »

The dust cloud is expected to last until Sunday, and even strengthen from this Saturday. With the rain forecast, sand deposits will cover the city and the snow cover at altitude.

Up to 200 km/h at the Croix de Chamrousse

At the same time, Isère is swept by violent winds this Friday. A gust of 200 km/ha was recorded at Croix de Chamrousse at midday. Other measurements illustrate this gale: 133 km/h in Malleval-en-Vecors, 124 km/h in Villard-de-Lans, 90 km/h in Reventin and 88 km/h in Bourgoin-Jallieu.

Due to strong winds that could cause trees to fall, the City of Grenoble has decided to close parks and public gardens for the day on Friday.
