MONTREAL, May 11, 2023 /CNW/ – United Steelworkers Local 8922 welcomes the bankruptcy of the security firm Neptune, which had not paid its employees for several weeks and owed the union approximately $1.4 million in unpaid dues.
“Finally, this company with very dubious practices will stop making fun of workers by not paying them and financing itself through their insurance and union dues. This bankruptcy is a relief for our members who will be able to find unpaid wages through the Wage Earner Protection Program,” argues the President of Local 8922, Vincent Boilywhich represents a thousand employees of Neptune.
The Neptune security agency, which earlier this week lost its operating license from the Private Security Bureau, has indeed placed itself under creditor protection, under the Companies Creditors Arrangement Act. This therefore opens the way for workers to claim under the Wage Earner Protection Program, which recovers up to $8,275 per person in unpaid wages.
“Wage Earner Protection Program claims are made on an individual basis, but we will support workers in their efforts to obtain the amounts owed to them,” adds Vincent Boily.
The syndicate registers itself as a creditor with the courts. Indeed, Neptune collected 1.4 million in insurance dues as well as union dues from the payroll, without ever paying them to the Syndicate.
The syndicate des Métallos, affiliated with the FTQ, is the largest union in the private sector in Quebec. It brings together more than 60,000 workers from all economic sectors.
