An Argentine artist suffered a heart attack on Friday evening while performing on stage at the Ambronay baroque festival (Ain), where the show was interrupted. Despite their intervention, emergency services were unable to resuscitate him.

“A 54-year-old man, a member of the troupe on stage, died following illness during a performance,” the Ain Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) said on Saturday.

This is the Argentinian baritone Alejandro Meerapfel, who has already performed many times in the Ambbatiale d’Ambronay. “His sudden disappearance leaves us in shock,” reacted the management of the Ambronay Cultural Meeting Center in a press release.

The show interrupted

The Cappella Mediterranea ensemble and the Namur chamber choir were on stage in Ambronay Abbey under the direction of Argentine conductor Leonardo García Alarcón, when the artist felt unwell. The show was broadcast by France Télévisions on Culturebox.

Emergency services intervened and “the public was quickly evacuated and a request for possible psychological support for the troops was also sent to center 15”, specifies the Sdis.

On the Ambronay festival website, management of the Cultural Meeting Center presented his condolences to the artist’s loved ones.

The festival, which is one of the major European meetings for baroque artists each year, is holding its 44th edition from September 15 to October 8.
