Hanging objects from your rearview mirror? You risk a fine!

The presence of rearview mirrors on the car has gradually appeared on cars and its mandatory nature too. If exterior rearview mirrors have been there since 1972, the one inside the passenger compartment has already been there for a few years (1969). It allows the driver to have a view of what is happening on the road behind him through the rear windshield. To drive safely, it is therefore essential that his vision is clear and that it does not obstruct the view of what is happening in front and on the sides of the road.

The French Highway Code provides several articles on the presence of the interior rearview mirror but also on the conditions. In a general framework, article 7 of a decree of November 20, 1969 provides: “The interior rearview mirror must be mounted inside the vehicle in such a way as to provide the driver with a stable and easy-to-distinguish image in normal traffic conditions. It must be adjustable from the driver’s seat.” So far, nothing surprising.

Let’s continue with article R412-6 II which, for its part, states: “Every driver must be constantly in a state and position to carry out conveniently and without delay all the maneuvers incumbent upon him. His possibilities of movement and his field of vision must not be reduced by the number or position of the passengers, by the objects transported or by the affixing of non-transparent objects to the windows.” This is where the presence of objects (and (…)
