“We no longer have a landline, so no more wifi and as here there is not much network…” It's a bit of a triple penalty for Chantal, this resident of Poublay, a small hamlet located three kilometers from Bignan near Locminé in Morbihan.
Since October 19, 2024, the fifteen households that live here are no longer supplied by the copper network. Here, where fiber has not yet arrived, it is ADSL which provides wifi. So no more landlines and no more Internet. The cause was a tree, a branch of which collapsed on a post and broke it. Quickly, a team came to secure the site and remove the pole. But, while the ground wires were still working, they decided to cut them, while waiting for a new pole. “It’s stupid,” exclaims Denise, another local resident. They could very well have tied the copper wire back into the trees temporarily.”
The pole was replaced but the wires are still down.
Quickly, Several of them are complaining to their respective operators, Free or Orange. Phone calls, sending SMS, photos, asking for explanations… But things are progressing slowly and that's an understatement.
In December a brand new post is installed. Yannick, another resident, believes in the outcome of the affair. “I then received an SMS from Orange telling me: problem resolved. » But in fact, if the new pole is indeed there, the wires are still on the ground, roughly “tidy” in the ditch!
For him, who works from home, it must function by sharing his cell phone connection. “Luckily Free increased our Internet package for free.”
“It’s shameful!” »
Above all, he is lucky to be a little higher up and to have a better network than Chantal. If she wants to watch her series, she has to watch them in replay. “ For the census, I was cut off 5 times while I was filling out the online form. » His connection sharing is not powerful enough. “At the start I was very angry. And then what do you want us to do? They told us it would be repaired in December, then January 15, and now they tell us January 31…”
Denise doesn't lose her temper. “It’s shameful!” » This 82-year-old woman only uses the landline. She had to buy a cell phone. ” But I had taken a two-hour package and I exceeded it. They cut me off. » Orange promised her that he would reimburse her. But she hopes “that by yelling a little” things will get better quickly.
“There have been Ciaràn and other storms for a year and a half and we have been in enormous demand. There is great pressure on all our teams. This is not an excuse but you have to understand the context. »

If we are to believe Orange, responsible for the network, it is not so sure. Yann Ayral, director of relations with local authorities in Morbihan at Orange, says: distraught» in the face of this type of situation which is increasing. He evokes a very complicated context: “There have been Ciaràn and other storms for a year and a half and we have been in great demand . There is great pressure on all our teams. This is not an excuse but you have to understand the context. » Another element: the theft of copper cable is a real national sport (read box) and has repercussions on the delay in repairs.
35 km of cable stolen in 2024 in Morbihan!
The theft of copper wire has become a real scourge throughout France and particularly in Brittany, one of the most affected regions of France with Île-de-France, Hauts-de-France and Centre- Loire Valley.
In 2024, 211 thefts of copper cables were recorded by Orange in the region, i.e. 85% more than in 2023 and 150% more than in 2022. This represents 100 km of stolen cables!
Morbihan is not to be outdone. According to the figures provided to us by the operator, no less than 75 thefts were observed, i.e. 35 km for a total weight of 54 tonnes. These flights impacted the operation of 8,200 lines, which places Morbihan in the top 3 national departments most affected.
B.P.
The tree has been pruned!
Especially since the manufacture of copper telecommunications cables is in sharp decline, due to the development of the fiber optic network. This significantly increases supply times. “Six to eight weeks during the last quarter of 2024”, according to an estimate given by Damien de Kerhor, Brittany Orange regional delegate, to our colleagues from Côté Quimper.
But let's come back to Poublay where, in fact, it is another parameter which adds slowness to the process. Orange, after having explored the matter in more detail, is in fact waiting for the tree which is still dangerously above the new pole to be pruned so that the incident does not recur at the slightest gust of wind.
«We approached the town hall. We have already relaunched them once and we are waiting for a return,” explains Yann Ayral.
Information taken from the town hall, which confirms to us that Orange called them again last Friday (following the intervention of the Gazette in fact!) and that they went to check that the owner of the land had done the right thing. pruning.
An elected official went there and warned Orange. From now onthe operator will have to mobilize a team (subcontractors in general, which does not speed things up) and put the line back into service. This will be done “as soon as possible”Orange assures us… Perhaps even as early as this Friday, January 24, 2025!
