Princess Leonor makes a final stopover in Las Palmas before crossing the Atlantic

The training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano arrived at the port of Las Palmas this Tuesday, January 21. On board are the 76 cadets from the Naval Military School, including the Princess of Asturias. Princess Leonor and her comrades make a final stopover on Spanish soil before beginning their great Atlantic crossing.

The last stopover of the Princess of Asturias on Spanish soil

Princess Leonor of Spain, 19, left the port of Cádiz, Andalusia, on Saturday, January 11, embarking on a five-month sea adventure. The Princess of Asturias is carrying out her training cruise aboard the training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, training planned for the cadets of the Naval Military School which she joined last school year. The training ship made a first stop on Friday January 17 on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands.

After a few days on the ground, the eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia reboarded the training ship this Monday, to make a very short trip to the neighboring island of Gran Canaria. This Tuesday, January 21, Princess Leonor and her comrades arrived at the port of Las Palmas, capital of the island of Gran Canaria. The Canary Islands archipelago, made up of two provinces, constitutes a Spanish region located off the coast of Morocco.

The training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano will begin its Atlantic crossing on Thursday

The heir to the Spanish throne and her comrades will remain in Las Palmas, a city of 380,000 inhabitants, until Thursday. On January 23, they will once again board the training ship which will begin its first major voyage. Princess Leonor will not see the ground for three weeks. It will take twenty-two days to cross the Atlantic Ocean and arrive at the port of Salvador de Bahía, Brazil.

On board, the heir to the throne sleeps in a cabin with the only three other young women on the adventure. In addition to learning about the life of a sailor, students continue to attend classes in 18 subjects. Princess Leonor undergoes a year of training in each of the military academies of the three components of the army, where training must normally last three years.

After its five-day stopover in Brazil, the ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, a 116-meter-long four-masted ship, will continue its route to the southern tip of America, before returning up the continent along the coasts . After crossing the Panama Canal and passing through the Caribbean, the ship will end its journey towards New York.
