Camille, teacher and artistic director, made a bold decision a year ago: leave France to settle in Tahiti. Guest by Grégory Ascher in the podcast The Distantshe talks about her journey and the reasons that pushed her to take the plunge. “My boyfriend is in the military, and the opportunity to go overseas presented itself. When we were told Tahiti, I thought about it, but I told myself that I would never be able to experience that again in a lifetime,” she confides.
The installation in Tahiti was facilitated by the military framework, which allowed them to have official accommodation. However, Camille highlights the administrative challenges of an old-fashioned life, where everything is still done in the traditional way, without the internet. Despite these obstacles, she does not regret her choice. “The setting is incredible. Although I don’t linger in the coconut trees on my way to work, on the weekends I swim with whales and enjoy breathtaking views of the turquoise water,” she enthuses.
Life in Tahiti is not without challenges. The cost of living is high, and Camille talks about the difficulties linked to importing products. “My shopping basket for two easily costs 120 euros,” she explains. However, the heavenly setting and the kindness of the inhabitants more than compensate for these inconveniences.
Camille also had to adapt to a different pace of lifewhere days start early and end at 9 p.m. “Stress has no place here. You learn to calm down and enjoy life,” she says. Although she appreciates the tranquility of Tahiti, the young woman admits that she sometimes misses the cultural activities of Paris.
-Finally, Camille addresses the question of social relations. Although she easily integrated the military community, building deep ties with the locals proved more complex. “There is a line between ‘Popas’ and Polynesians, but some people have adopted families who welcome them with open arms,” she says.
