the Conference of Bishops asks the courts to open an investigation

The president of the Conference of Bishops of (CEF), Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, announced Friday January 17 that he was asking the courts to open an investigation after the new revelations about Abbot Pierre.

«In view of the seriousness and scale of the new facts revealed this week by Emmaüs and in two documentaries broadcast on national television channels, on the subject of sexual assaults committed by Abbé Pierre on women, children and people in a precarious situation for a period going at least from the 1970s to the 2000s, Mgr Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, president of the Conference of Bishops of France (CEF), calls on justice to open an investigation”explains a press release from the CEF.

“I wrote a report to the prosecutor to ask him to consider opening an investigation into Abbé Pierre” in order to “to be able to investigate possible other victims or possible accomplices” or on “non-denunciations”he added, repeating his ” horror “ after new revelations of sexual violence this week targeting the priest.

Examine why the facts were not reported

The president of the CEF also suggests that the prosecution examine the attitude of those who may have been aware of these facts for years without reacting. He asks her to examine “the opportunity to open an investigation to determine the conditions under which the facts mentioned may not have been reported to the courts during all these years”.

Mgr de Moulins-Beaufort greets in the same press release the “ victims who found the courage to testify about the sexual assaults they suffered » and expresses to them “once again his immense pain and his closeness”. He encourages anyone who has suffered violence from Abbot Pierre, “to come forward if they wish to one of the Church’s listening systems, or set up by Emmaüs”.
