New meeting at the Tarascon plastic arts workshop with Jérémy Damien

For several years, the municipal plastic arts workshop of Tarascon has organized meetings with an artist who invests in the Workshop for several weeks by showing their work, presenting their approach and leading a workshop. 3-day artistic practice.

This is aimed at the students of the workshop, but also at the general public and at anyone attentive to art in order to share and discuss about today’s artists. Recently Philippe Turc, Julia Scalbert, Anthony Morel, Katie Montanier responded to the Workshop’s invitation. These meetings provide the opportunity to make a special contact with current creation.

Jérémy Damien is a painter who lives and works in Nîmes. Trained in the fine arts of and Nîmes, he is, among other things, a teacher in design drawing-painting at the University of Design of Nîmes.

The workshop presents its work as “essentially abstract, anchored in a very concrete simplicity of means. The notion of “unfinished”, the use of frames and sometimes the partitioning of his pictorial space are very present elements. They bring a breath – essential to his work – which is played like a score with its voids and its fullness, its own rhythm“.

“A work of discernment”

The artist has participated in numerous exhibitions, projects, visual creations such as the projections on the Pont du in 2021.I remember a painting by Miró seen at the Maeght foundation, in front of which I had the feeling of work still in progress, the canvas was three-quarters painted blue, only one blank surface left with a glimpse of the tiling remaining visibleconfides Jérémy Damien. I could make out a few sketches of patterns and that was it..”

And the artist continues: “This suspended gesture revealed the foundations of an unfinished composition, a transparency in the material and time which became poetic in its ability to reveal its perpetual incompleteness. My work finds meaning when a potential for spatial opening is generated in the composition; if I am not careful to restore this balance, something then inexorably dies. Perhaps the interest of painting in itself. Let’s call this work of discernment.“.

Several events will therefore, during this meeting, revolve around the artist.
