“I watch it with my 5 brothers and sisters and we always laugh so much”

Regressive, funny, romantic… whatever, when it comes to Christmas films it's not about aesthetic criteria but above all about rediscovered emotions. Today, comedian Paul de Saint Sernin explains his passion for OSS 117: Cairo, nest of spiesby Michel Hazanavicius (2006).

“Without hesitation, it’s my cult Christmas film. I was a teenager when OSS 117 : Cairo, nest of spies was released in 2006, and it was a brilliant hit of humor. I had never seen such an offer in the cinema. Since then, I have never really found a film where the valves come so close to the sixth degree. Every line is super daring, and yet none are really embarrassing. Behind these big schoolboy jokes, there is in fact so much finesse that it is not shocking. Without sounding like a 33-year-old boomer, we have difficulty finding this freedom which feels good today.

I watch it with my brothers and sisters (I'm the oldest of six children) and we always laugh so much. This character of Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath, played by Jean Dujardin, is so proud, egocentric… And his way of always being right reminds us of our father, our uncles, and especially our grandfather. The latter was in the image of Cruchot, the famous character of Louis de Funès in the saga The Gendarmes : he was never wrong, even when he was wrong! For the end of year celebrations, we meet either in Aveyron, at my grandparents' house, or in Chaville, near , in my parents' house. Family reunions are big because there are no fewer than forty-three cousins.

“We wince at the same time as we pass the dishes”

We all love each other very much but we rarely say it to each other. Everything is hidden behind a proud posture of “everything is always fine”, even if we are hungry, cold or have difficulty digesting a scathing remark! But this somewhat strict atmosphere reveals incredible moments of sharing and laughter. Especially during meals. I like the big table style where we wince at the same time as we pass the dishes around. On the menu on Christmas Eve, it's salmon, blinis, meat and chestnuts. Without forgetting my mother’s unmissable tiramisu with speculoos, which she also makes me on my birthdays.”
