Sarah Ferguson reveals the last words exchanged with Queen Elizabeth II

The last time Sarah Ferguson spoke with Elizabeth II, she shed a few tears. In a touching cross-interview with his sister Janepublished by The Timesthe Duchess of York opens up about her attachment to the royal family and the members to whom she is closest. Among them, a royal figure who died in 2022, at the age of 96: Queen Elizabeth II, mother of “Fergie’s” ex-husband, Prince Andrew. She recounts how the Queen “never let her down”, including when she faced periods of mental and physical turmoil.

Back to her marriage to Andrew, in 1986. “When we got married, I was “a breath of fresh air,” she explains. Everyone loved me, it was addictive. I think I made a mistake. I lost myself probably trying to look like Diana. I was addicted to food. The fact that I could eat my emotions was the only thing that saved my life. I was huge, over 150 pounds, when I had Beatrice in 1988, and I think I had postpartum depression. Everyone said, “You’re the duchess of pork,” and I believed my critics. » Faced with the degrading comments and the internal crisis experienced by the Duchess, the Queen appeared as unconditional support: “The best advice she gave me was the last thing she said to me: “Sarah , remember that you are good enough.” It made me cry. » Already in September 2023, she mentioned these last moving words in her podcast, Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah. “That was the last thing the Queen said to me: ‘Be yourself Sarah.’ She was so annoyed when I wasn’t myself. And that’s probably when I found myself in trouble But now I am myself and I am very lucky to be able to be.

Duchess devoted to the Crown

In the same interview with Timesshe reiterates her absolute support for her ex-husband, mired in numerous scandals – from suspicions of child abuse linked to his proximity to Jeffrey Epstein to a dark espionage affair linked to a Chinese agent, which would have cost him his job at the Windsor Christmas Mass, traditionally held at Sandringham. Sarah Ferguson will not be present either, apparently out of solidarity for the man with whom she still lives at Royal Lodge, 28 years after their divorce. “I was totally and completely in love with Andrew. I would 100% do it again [l’épouser]. He is the best, a wonderful man with a big heart and great kindness. Our wedding was the happiest day of my life. […] He supports me as much as I support him. He supported me through good times and bad, not just marriage or divorce. We agree on the three Cs: communication, compromise, compassion. »

In the columns of Timesthe mother of princesses Eugenie et Beatrice also shows his friendship to Queen Camilla. “Queen Camilla was a close friend of Mum [Susan Barrantes, ndlr] that’s why we are so close today. But Diana was my best friend since I was 14. That’s why it’s so important that the Queen and I get along well now. It’s nice, and she reminds me of mom. I admire the extraordinary support she gives to this country. I want to do everything I can for the queen. I wish I was asked to do more. »
