A set of autograph manuscripts, including around ten titles by the artist, is offered by Sotheby’s. It comes from a man with whom the singer allegedly had a romantic affair.
Nantes . This legendary song by Barbara, dedicated to her father’s last day, was recorded in 1964. She began writing it in 1959, the day after his burial in a cemetery in Nantes. 60 years later, a set of documents including the draft of this song, as well as ten others, was sold at auction at Sotheby’s. If everything is already presented online, starting at 15,000 euros, a physical sale is planned in Paris this Wednesday, at 2 p.m.
“This set is contemporary with the singer’s fifth album released in October 1964 and rewarded with the 1965 Grand Prix du Disque awarded by the Académie Charles-Cros”specifies the international house. These witnesses to the story come from Alain Perrin, who formerly managed the Théâtre du Cothurne, in Lyon, where the singer gave concerts at the beginning of 1964. The two protagonists would have had a history of love. “When their story ended, Barbara gave the young administrator these manuscripts, carefully preserved by him until today”details Sotheby’s on its website.
Symbolic text
Overall, 14 pages are dedicated to the song Nantes. The text is a little different from the final version and the first, second and last verses do not appear. “The numerous repentances and erasures as well as the clean-ups bear witness to the genesis of this song and Barbara’s difficulty in translating her emotions and her deep pain”specifies the auction house. The artist, a victim of incest, went to Nantes to see her father, from whom she had not heard from for ten years. Arriving too late, she could not say goodbye to him.
The autograph manuscripts sold also include drafts of other masterpieces, such as The Brown Lady , Gare de Lyonor even scattered notes testifying to his love affair. More generally, this lot is part of a sale entitled “Books and Manuscripts, from Galileo to Warhol”.
