A Moroccan breakthrough at the Oscars

After joining the official selection of the Film Festival last May, to represent Morocco at the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category, “ Everybody Loves Touda »by Nabil Ayouch qualifies in all the main Oscar categories. A first!

This qualification of the film directed by Ayouch in several categories, such as “best director” or “best actress”, represents unprecedented international recognition of Moroccan cinema.

The film is also nominated for the Golden Globes for Best Foreign Film, the Spirit Awards, the Critic’s Choice Awards, and the National Board of Review. On this occasion, Moroccan director Nabil Ayouch declared to the media: “ Representing our country in these international competitions is a source of immense pride. I sincerely thank everyone who believes in the film and has supported us so far. This is a new door opening for Moroccan cinema and a further sign of its dynamism. ».

Waiting for the shortlist

The film tells the story of Touda. This ambitious young woman who dreams of becoming a famous singer in the capital. Mother of a young deaf and mute 9-year-old boy, Touda begins to dream of a destiny while she sings every evening in a provincial bar with a certain success among the men at the table.

To optimize the film’s chances at the Oscars, Nisrin Erradi, who plays the lead role of Touda, toured the United States. Screenings were held in major cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. In addition, the talented actress Nisrin Erradi has just won the “Artistic Expression” prize awarded by the jury of the official competition of the 30th edition of the MedFilm Festival in Rome (November 7-17), for distinguished interpretation of his role in this feature film.

For their part, the producers of the opus did not hide their enthusiasm. In a press release, they indicate that “this is a great first for Morocco, which had never been represented in these major categories. »

This rise of a Moroccan film in the prodigious Oscar competition will undoubtedly allow better visibility of Moroccan cinema on the international scene.

The next appointment in the race for the film, “ Everybody Loves Touda », will be held in mid-December, with the announcement of the shortlist for the Oscar for Best International Film where only 15 films will be selected.
