For ten years, this emblematic sculpture by the artist COSKUN, born for the ephemeral, has captivated passers-by in the Manoir park. Today, time and the elements have finally imposed their law: “La Main Verte” bids farewell to Martigny.
Installed in the Manoir park in Martigny, “La Main Verte” has stood since 2014 as a vibrant tribute to nature. Created by the artist COSKUN for the exhibition Authentik Energy and the 5 continents festivalthis monumental sculpture of timber and vine stocks was originally intended to be burned. This ephemeral art gesture was to mark the end of the festival. But faced with the enthusiasm it aroused, its destiny changed: later renamed “La Main Verte”, it was preserved and entrusted to time.
Over ten years, the sculpture evolved, welcoming at its base an ivy which gently climbed and enveloped the wood. But time, combined with the fragility of the materials and the neighboring work, ended up getting the better of this work, designed to be temporary. A recent analysis has in fact confirmed what the artist and the municipality of the Octodurian city feared: saving “La Main Verte” would require major interventions which would distort its essence. Together, they therefore made the choice to say goodbye to him, with the initial artistic intention.
