Palestinian artists illustrate the horrors of Gaza

An exhibition featuring the works of four Palestinian artists from Gaza has opened in Amman. The latter illustrated the horrors of war and Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip.

The exhibition, titled Under Fire, shows how these artists persevered in their work despite heavy bombing and widespread destruction of their neighborhoods and cultural centers.

“The Under Fire exhibition features four artists from Gaza. Gaza artists have not stopped drawing since the start of the war; they have continued despite the inhumane conditions they face, including forced displacement, hunger and lack of basic necessities. They continued to produce their art, to draw and to express the conditions in which they live” said Mohammad Shaqdih, exhibition manager and deputy director of Darat al-Funun.

Their works were transported from Gaza to Egypt through the Rafah crossing before it was closed by the Israeli army.

Nearly 80 works of art have been collected and sent to be exhibited at the Darat al-Funun Foundation in the Jordanian capital.

In the messages sent by the artists, some say: “If you ask us how we are, we are not well, but we thank God.” Another artist, Basem al-Maqousi, says: “These works are not works of art intended to be displayed in exhibition halls and acquired by art collectors, rather they are pieces of our bodies, of our blood and our flesh, we painted them to express the reality in which we live under this war”, added the exhibition manager.

The works are accompanied by messages written by the artists describing their living conditions and their psychological state.

“Frankly, they are very talented people. Despite everything that happens during the war, their talent remains. We still see creativity and art. And whatever happens, it will not extinguish (the art) in them. Despite everything, they continue to produce very beautiful works. They are a deeply oppressed people who deserve much better than what is happening to them. “, said visitor Layan Mohammad.

The exhibition, which opened in mid-October, will be open until March next year at the Darat al-Funun Foundation.
