Great architect of a mythology which has infused all of the world’s popular culture, HP Lovecraft is for mangaka Gou Tanabe the inspiration for a work entirely focused on cosmic horror. A bridge between 19th century New England and 21st century Japan, transcending borders and time, this meeting between pulp and manga is an opportunity to verify, once again, how great stories are universal.
Crowned with the Series Prize during the 47th edition of the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2020, the great adaptation of the work of HP Lovecraft by Gou Tanabe (Lovecraft’s Masterpiecestwelve volumes published in France by Ki-oon) continues to exert a strange fascination on readers – showing itself to be both absolutely faithful to the original text, while constituting a true personal appropriation.
While the myth of Cthulhu has just made its debut in La Pléiade, the 52nd edition of the Angoulême Festival offers, with the exhibition Gou Tanabe x H.P. Lovecraft : visions hallucinéesto extend the dialogue between the two authors. Organized around a journey inspired by the unfolding of the stories of the Master of Providence, the exhibition will embark on unknown lands in search of these forgotten cities where the Great Ancients sleep, in visions where it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the dream of madness.
Through more than a hundred original drawings presented in a cyclopean scenography and accompanied by extracts from the seminal text, visitors will be able to discover Gou Tanabe’s working methods (combining traditional drawing on paper and digital tools) , as well as his interpretations of the major figures in the stories of the most influential fantasy author of the 20th century. The selection of plates presented will extend from the mangaka’s first foray into the universe of HP Lovecraft with The Outsider in 2004, until the cycle devoted to the character of Randolph Carter which he recently started. Disturbing architecture, disturbing figures and suffocating atmospheres will be there.
