Jean-Paul Belmondo and Elodie Constantin: rare photos of the exes, happy despite the divorce

This Friday, September 13, Paul Belmondo announced the death of his mother, Elodie Constantin, first wife of his famous father Jean-Paul Belmondo, at the age of 90..

It was by sharing a touching photo of her with him as a baby that he shared the sad news with his subscribers on Instagram: “I love you Mom, rest in peace”.

The love story between Élodie Constantin and Jean-Paul Belmondo begins in the early 1950s. While Élodie, a dancer under the name of Renee Constantshone on stage, Jean-Paul Belmondo was a promising young actor at the Paris National Conservatory. Their meeting was love at first sight, the couple married in 1959 in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. Their union saw the birth of three children: Patricia in 1953, Florence in 1960 and Paul in 1963.

Élodie played a crucial role in Jean-Paul’s professional debut. She was his unwavering support and a pillar in difficult times, as the actor revealed in the documentary Belmondo: The Incorrigible. Jean-Paul Belmondo often credited Élodie for her encouragement and belief in him, saying she had been essential to his career. The couple’s happiness seemed endless until Belmondo’s career took a decisive turn during the filming of the movie The Tribulations of a Chinese in China. During this period, the actor met Ursula Andress, an affair that would mark the end of their marriage. Separated in 1965, the divorce was not pronounced until 1968, but Élodie continued to be a valuable support for Jean-Paul and their children before a tragedy deeply marked their story: in 1993, their daughter Patricia died tragically in a fire, leaving Élodie and Jean-Paul in the grip of immense pain. Faced with grief, the exes remained united, as evidenced by the photos of them despite the separation, to be found in our slideshow.

Élodie Constantin’s last public appearance was on September 9, 2021, during National tribute to Jean-Paul Belmondo at Les Invalides. Surrounded by her children and grandchildren, she attended the event with moving dignity. Her continued support for Jean-Paul and his family, even after all these years, shows how much she was a strong and resilient woman.
