“There are ultra-chemical products in our clothes”, “I don’t find that very reassuring”, “Zara, we’re waiting for an explanation”: this video of sandals foaming in the rain is making the rounds on TikTok and worrying Internet users

Fast-fashion giant Zara is once again at the heart of a controversy. While the ready-to-wear brand has been launching into luxury for several months, a video published on TikTok could well call into question the brand’s high-end positioning.

Lena posts a video on her TikTok account at the beginning of September. Despite the rain, the young woman wears her new flip-flops bought at Zara. Problem: her feet are foaming. Seized with laughter, she explains: “Everyone looks at my feet and laughs”. And she concludes in the caption: “If you buy Zara heeled flip-flops, avoid the rain”The video has been liked more than 52,000 times and has generated a strong reaction.

“I have a long leather jacket from Zara, and I can’t wear it if it rains. It foams everywhere.”confides an Internet user in a comment. A little further on, another young woman also explains that she has a faux leather jacket from the brand “which foams in the rain and leaves white marks”. And similar experiences with products purchased from the Spanish brand seem to be very numerous, if we are to believe the comments.

While some Internet users are making fun of the scene, others are more worried. “Now do you believe us when we say there are ultra-chemicals in our clothes?”says a young woman. “I don’t find that very reassuring.”confides another, “I hope your feet are doing well since then,” assures another user of the Chinese platform.

In some comments, Internet users do not hesitate to directly challenge the brand: “Zara, we are waiting for an explanation here”. Or again: “@ZARA an explanation for the foam on the shoes, down jackets and vests please?”.

Under a video dating from two years ago (yes, the foam on Zara clothes does not seem to date from yesterday), an Internet user explains: “I work at Zara so I’ll set the record straight: the fabric treatment products cause the foam. Wash your jacket once and it’s good to go.” It’s still difficult when it comes to leather clothing or sandals, but for everything else, you can put them straight in the washing machine.

A dermatologist interviewed by the Wall Street Journal did some research on the subject. According to Donald Belsito, the clothes we buy could have potentially passed through many countries before arriving in our closets. Many countries with varying laws on permissible levels of chemical use.

Dyes and fixatives are first added during manufacturing. Then anti-mold agents, so that the clothes do not succumb to humidity during transport. Dr. Donald Belsito advises washing new clothes in the washing machine twice, before wearing them for the first time. “I’ve seen some really strange things, so I’d rather not take any risks.”he assures.
