It’s a bit of a surprise from the chef! From December 6, 2024, The Slaughterhousesa reference for contemporary art in Toulouse and the region, will give carte blanche to the Toulouse rapper It waswhose mission will be to invest for several months the four large rooms on the ground floor of the prestigious museum nestled on the left bank of the Garonnein the Saint-Cyprien district.
Oli, curator of a unique exhibition in Toulouse
We knew Oli the rapper (with Bigflo, he sold more than a million albums in almost 10 years of career), Oli the entrepreneur (with his brother, he set up the Rose Festival, his label Bonne Etoile, and even a clothing brand, Visionnaire) and in fact a little less Oli the contemporary art enthusiast. And yet! Olivio Ordonez has been an art lover, in the broad sense of the term, since his early childhood! And here he is now with the cap of exhibition curator.
As often, it’s his brother Florian who has the right words to talk about it. In a text prepared to present this unique exhibition, Bigflo assures:
“My little brother was always different. As children, when I played on the console, glued to the television, he stayed in the garden for hours. He made characters with earth and water. He drew a collection of monsters in notebooks and spent the afternoon with the old ladies of the neighborhood. At the age of 11, at the Abattoirs museum, he saw a piano passing through the air of the main courtyard. A shock, surely what shocked him. will push him to want to do spectacular shows. At the age of 12, at the Abattoirs museum, he brought back a pink object to add to a mountain in the city’s colors.
An “imaginary museum” created by Oli
The person concerned confirms the words of his older brother: “It’s the museum I went to when I was little and where I have been all my life, in Toulouse. It is a large contemporary art museum, truly renowned and legendary in the art world. And they give me carte blanche! », rejoiced Oli on Instagram, ” relieved “ to finally be able to reveal the contours of its “imaginary museum” (a nod to André Malraux’s essay), since that’s what it’s about, which he created in the greatest secrecy for several months.
And the exhibition is coming as unique as it is exciting !
“I have the entire bottom of the museum, four enormous rooms, where I was lucky enough to be able to dig through the reserves, hang the paintings that I like, write texts next to them. There will be an exclusive piece which tells all that. There will be video, graffiti artists, sculpture, paintings, text… It’s a project that will last five months!”
From JR to Joan Miro via Nougaro, big names
« The Imaginary Museum of Oli showcases selected works according to his sensibilitieshis personal history and his practice of rap, creating new encounters while inviting us to rethink the role of the museum, its spaces and the relationship of each and everyone to the work of art,” indicates the museum. , including the director, Lauriane Gricourtaccompanied Oli in the choice of the different works.
“At the crossroads of art and rap, the exhibition unfolds a personal score. To the rhythm of memories, textual creations and invitations to other artists, each room invites you to meet. The themes that are dear to the duo, regularly mentioned in their songs, rhyme family, childhood and attachment to Toulouse with multiculturalism, the power of orality and art for all.
In this “imaginary museum”which therefore includes works from the museum’s collection, collaborations with artists and new performances, Toulouse residents will soon be able to discover works by iconic artists like JR, Joan Miro, Pierre Soulages or Andy Warhol…or even a certain Claude Nougaro ! Also present will be Reso, Supraw, Boby, Juliette Green and Invader and Keith Haring (non-exhaustive list!).
A cultural program concocted by Oli
Beyond this exhibition, the Toulouse rapper has concocted cultural programming which will accompany the exhibition for five months. “Designed to be lively and open, this exhibition will be punctuated with events, concerts, workshops, performances, conferences and open stages. The guests will come from different worlds such as music or art, whose stories intersect and testify to shared relationships and influences,” confirm the Abattoirs.
It was an anime several masterclasseswill participate in several conferences and will even organize a big end-of-exhibition party on May 4.
