THE directors expose the problem of violence notably macho in Mexico. It follows a young man, Sujo, who finds himself orphaned after the assassination of his father, a sicario in a small Mexican town. He narrowly escapes death thanks to his aunt who raises him in the countryside. As a teenager, rebellion awakens in Sujo and he joins the local cartel. His father’s legacy then seems to catch up with his destiny.
Italian director Luca Guadagnino will chair the jury of the 21st edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival, scheduled from November 29 to December 7. He will be accompanied in his mission by the other members of the jury, namely the Iranian director Ali Abbasi, the Indian director Zoya Akhtar, the American actress Patricia Arquette, the Belgian actress Virginie Efira, the Australian actor Jacob Elordi, the British-American actor Andrew Garfield, Moroccan actress Nadia Kounda, and Argentinian director Santiago Miter. Moroccan cinema will be particularly highlighted during this new edition with a total of 12 films, presented in the different sections of the festival.
The film also rewarded for his scenario presents a side of vulnerable children who unknowingly fall into the nets of drug traffickers. It also explores possible ways to escape violence, while questioning the place of education in a society marked by a strong presence of crime. Sujo also received the critic’s prize.
The FICAR Jury Prize 2024 was attributed to “Under the Grey Sky», a poignant work signed by the Polish director Mara Tamkovich. A couple of journalists fight to stay true to themselves despite the repressions in stifling Belarus after the 2020 protests. This film is inspired by the real life of a young journalist, Katsiaryna Andreyevawho is serving his 8-year sentence in a Belarusian prison. In the film, while the activist journalist “Lena Antonova», who plays Katsiaryna Andreyeva (played by Aliaksandra Vaitsekhovich) is imprisoned, the story leads us to follow her husband, Ilya (Novopolskij). He, with whom she dreamed of leaving the country for a new life, is now forced to hide, desperately seeking to understand his wife’s fate and, if possible, to orchestrate her release. The director appropriates this story to deliver a personal interpretation, marked by a singular artistic vision.
On the performance side, the Female Interpretation Prize saluted the actress Fatma Sfar you film «The Needle” of Abdelhamid Bochnakwhile the Best Actor Award went to actor Valentin Novopolskij of “Under the Gray Sky”, confirming the emotional depth of this drama.
The Audience Award crowned “Taxi Monamour” of the Italian Ciro De Caroa touching work which won over spectators with its sincerity. The jury also awarded a special mention to the Moroccan film “The Lost Princess” of Hicham Hajjifor its originality and artistic finesse.
With this edition rich in cinematic discoveriesthe Raba International Film Festivalt continues to distinguish itself as a space dedicated to exploring unique stories and spotlighting promising talent. By bringing together works from all over the world, it offers the Moroccan public an opening to diverse artistic perspectives, while strengthening Morocco’s place on the international cultural scene.
