The singer of the legendary group La Perfecta, Paulo Albin, has died

He was one of the most beloved voices in the West Indies, Guyana and elsewhere. Paulo Albin, one of the emblematic singers of the group La Perfecta, died this Tuesday, November 19, in , at the age of 78.

He had an infectious laugh and a captivating voice… A voice that rocked and made several generations dance, in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Guyana and beyond. Jean-Paul Albin, better known as Paulo Albin, died this Tuesday, November 19, at the University Hospital of Martinique.

For many years he was one of the pillars of the La Perfecta group. A group with which he performed shortly after the creation of the group, in the early 1970s. He became one of the essential voices.

I am La Perfecta and La Perfecta is me” he said with amusement.

And he was right. Sharing the stage with his accomplice, Marius Priam and talented musicians, La Perfecta brought a new touch to West Indian music and influenced many artists. Paulo Albin was one of the architects of this new sound.

The title La Divinité, which he performed, still remains one of the favorite songs of many people.

Tireless, Paulo Albin loved the stage. He loved his group, but left it, several times, to come back better.

The last time was in 2015, to launch the “Paulo Albin All Stars”. Their concert, on Friday May 13, 2016, in Trois-Ilets, in Martinique, remains a fond memory for many.

But it was with La Perfecta that he performed on a large number of stages, often to sold-out audiences.

In 2021, the band released an album, celebrating La Perfecta’s 50 years of existence.

Paulo Albin was 78 years old and with his death, a part of West Indian music disappears.
