the incredible performance of Vincent Lindon, alone on stage in a film stretched like a bow by Gilles Bourdos

In this very short film (1h16), Gilles Bourdos recounts the car journey of a man faced with a difficult choice, ready to assume the consequences of a decision he made without hesitation. Vincent Lindon, alone on stage for more than an hour, carries this perilous role with rare intensity. The ChoiceFrench remake of the British thriller Locke (2014), starring Tom Hardy, directed by Steven Knight, is released in theaters on November 20.

Married and father of two boys, Joseph Cross, a construction engineer, is a reliable man at work, as in his personal life. Nothing should be able to disturb the peaceful and orderly life of this solid fifty-year-old. And yet, the day before the most delicate moment, he leaves the construction site and takes the road to , where an event awaits him that he wants to take responsibility for, even if this act dictated by duty and a deep desire to repair his childhood, comes to upset everything he has built up until then.

The director chose to tell this story in a unity of place (the car, even if it is moving), and in almost real time (the time of the journey between the construction site and Paris). During this period of time suspended from everything that is happening away from the passenger compartment, Joseph must face three emergencies at the same time: reassuring one woman, consoling another, and remotely piloting the biggest, very delicate stage, of the gigantic project that he directs.

A unique setting, a single protagonist in the image (we only hear the voices of the others on the telephone throughout the film), this audacious and radical directorial choice is based on the performance of Vincent Lindon. Bet won. Filmed in close-up for more than an hour from every angle, the actor manages to share with us the tension, the issues of the situation, and the disorders raging in his character’s skull and to make the emotions circulate and the feelings of those who will never be seen in the image. His body, his voice, his gaze, his presence becoming the almost exclusive theater of dramaturgy.

This refined film, carried by Vincent Lindon at the height of his art, is a formal feat, which through its radicality invites an almost metaphysical reflection on courage and a sense of responsibility.
