Paramount+: the “Yellowstone” series returns without Kevin Costner but still attractive

A soap opera as much behind the cameras as in front. Since its debut in the United States in 2018, the series “Yellowstone”, from the Paramount Network channel, has been a big success. Created by Taylor Sheridan (“Mayor of Kingstown”, “Lioness”), it takes place on a huge ranch in the American West, owned by the Dutton clan. This family, led by patriarch John (Kevin Costner), must face many challenges to ensure its future and that of its land. Between attacks from the outside and intra-family rifts, the fiction demonstrates audacity and a fine mastery of twists and turns.

On January 1, 2023, the first part of season 5 ended, with a sequel planned for the summer of the same year. But the strike of American screenwriters and then actors delayed production. So much so that the schedule became too complicated to keep. In the end, it was announced that Kevin Costner, particularly busy with his cinematic fresco “Horizon: An American Saga”, was leaving the series and that this second part of the season would also mark the end of “Yellowstone”.

A tragedy and its consequences

Different versions of what happened behind the scenes have been described in the American media, but what is certain is that the long-awaited arrival of the new episodes settles the question of the fate reserved for John Dutton, the hero played by Kevin Costner. As we suspected, episode 9, released online this Monday, November 11 on Paramount +, reveals from its first minutes that Dutton, governor of Montana, is dead. It remains to be known the real circumstances of the tragedy and the consequences on the rest of the clan.

In this way, this first of the new parts is particularly attractive. The war between Beth (stunning Kelly Reilly) and her brother Jamie (played by Wes Bentley) is already shaking the walls. Many surprises punctuate the episode, particularly rich in emotions and breathtaking images. The plot indeed navigates between Montana and Texas, where the herd of cattle from the Yellowstone ranch was moved for a year.

The latest news from the United States, for the moment not officially confirmed, suggests that ultimately “Yellowstone” could continue beyond this season 5. The production would then rely on the duo formed by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser (who lends his features to Rip Wheeler, the on-screen companion of the previous one) to carry the rest of the saga. In any case, we must savor this salvo which already promises to be explosive.
