Tangier – The work of an international conference on translation and artificial intelligence opened on Tuesday at the King Fahd Higher School of Translation in Tangier, under the theme “Translation and artificial intelligence (AI): challenges of theorization and practice”.
Organized over two days by the Translation, Terminology and Lexicography Laboratory (LTTL) affiliated with the School, this conference aims to shed light on an aspect which is not recent in translation studies, that of new technologies assisting the act of translation.
Speaking on this occasion, the Director of the King Fahd Higher School of Translation, Mohamed Kharchich, indicated that the subject of translation and AI is a current subject, of great importance in the economic situation. current.
“AI and translation have coexisted side by side for years,” he noted, recalling that automated translation has appeared since the 1950s and has developed with the technological development of tools and new translation techniques.
In recent years, AI is increasingly beginning to perform tasks that previously only the human element could do, Mr. Kharchich continued, believing that it is a double-edged sword, because although AI facilitates the translation process and communication between people with instant translation of the majority of languages, it faces several limitations.
Indeed, according to Mr. Kharchich, academicians agree on the idea that regardless of the level of technology achieved, the human element remains at the heart of the translation process, which cannot be mechanical, since it requires extensive knowledge. important knowledge linked to cultural, social and historical characteristics, as well as to particular contexts and circumstances.
This conference is intended to be an opportunity to deepen the debate on these questions, as well as on the means capable of supporting the human element to achieve a rational use of AI in the field of translation, he said. -he added, noting that it will also help develop conclusions to help address the challenges related to this issue.
Mr. Kharchich also indicated that the conference comes in the wake of the scientific meetings organized by the School in accordance with its academic and scientific vocation, as well as within the framework of dozens of meetings organized by the Abdelmalek University. Essaâdi (UAE) on the impact of AI on several fields, including economics, engineering and the human sciences.
For his part, the director of the Translation, Terminology and Lexicography Laboratory (LTTL), Naoufal El Bakali, indicated that this scientific event brings together a range of national and international researchers and experts, coming in particular from France, Mauritania, Italy and Australia, to present their contributions concerning the theme of translation and AI, which is causing a lot of discussion around the world, specifying that the conference will lead to highly anticipated outputs in this area.
“We have scheduled two days devoted to different themes relating to theory, didactics, pedagogy and new technologies, as well as to the question of computer language programming and other subjects which challenge related practices and technologies to translation,” he said in a statement to MAP.
The first day of the conference is marked by a plenary session on the theme of translation and AI, followed by three parallel sessions addressing the themes of “The Arabic language and AI”, “The translator’s professions and AI ” and “Specialized Translation and AI”.
The second day will also include a plenary session, and three other parallel sessions on the topics of “Ethics and AI”, “Comparative translation and AI” and “Dictionary and terminology”.
