The star actor, whose slim silhouette stands out among Hollywood standards, remembers that his appearance was initially perceived as an obstacle to his career.
Hollywood superstar, Timothée Chalamet also had to endure some rejections in his early days. The slender 28-year-old Franco-American actor has seen several roles escape him due to his body type, as he recounts in a new interview for Zane Lowe’s podcast on Apple Music.
“If I auditioned for ‘The Maze Runner’ or ‘Divergent’, projects of that nature which were popular when I was starting out, the feedback was always the same: ‘You don’t have the right body’.”
“I had an agent who called me and said, ‘You need to gain weight,'” he continued. “Not unkindly… but you see, what.”
New star
Timothée Chalamet, whose slender figure stands out among the increasingly developed bodies of Hollywood male muses, is one of the most eminent actors of the young American generation. Revealed in 2017 by the film Call Me By Your Name (which earned him a nomination for the Oscar for best actor, at only 22 years old), he has established himself and has taken on the most diverse projects.
The young artist first distinguished himself in a confidential cinema (Lady Bird, Hot summer nights), then with star filmmakers (Woody Allen with A rainy day in New YorkWes Anderson with The French Dispatch), to the blockbusters (The musical Wonka and the saga Dune).
He explains that he found “a very personal style” with the independent films of his beginnings: “They were smaller budgets, but very pleasant films (…) It was with them that I found my rhythm, my self-confidence, my flow, whatever you want to call it.”
Timothée Chalamet’s next great cinematic adventure, A complete stranger by James Mangold, is expected in theaters on January 29. A biopic of Bob Dylan in which he will play the musician.
