Higher Leaves bears its name well as its superiority was blatant in this Prix Fille de l’Air (Group III). She, like her jockey, the irresistible Alexis Pouchin who will soon be leaving to spend the winter in Hong Kong, did not have to exert their talent to leave their rivals in the distance. Six and a half lengths to the finish between Higher Leaves et Euboeabut the gap could have been bigger if she had not made some mistakes in the final straight. “She was above the rest and I won the whole race” explains Alexis Pouchin and adds “French races are less selective than at home in England and she was able to lead at her own pace which was not the case last time at Newmarket where she was opposed. The terrain didn’t bother her and I’m delighted to win my second race with her after winning a listed race at Longchamp.” Behind the casual laureate, Euboea emerges victorious from a long and indecisive struggle with Noir and therefore takes the first place in front of the resident of Alicja Karkosa. Jockey of NoirBenjamin Marie looks back on this performance: “She is the real 1,800 meter mare and the distance was the end of the world for her. This is what cost us second place, the winner being unapproachable. I’m sure she can win a group for females at her preferred distance.”
