Return to Chernobyl, one of the best HBO original creations of recent years, directed by the showrunner behind the adaptation of The Last of Us.
A masterpiece from HBO
It’s well known that HBO reigns supreme in the world of the small screen. For more than twenty years, the American pay channel has produced some of the most memorable series in the history of television. The Sopranos, The Wire, Oz, The Leftovers, Game of Thrones, Six Feet Under… so many programs which have forever marked an entire generation of spectators. But we also retain much more spontaneous and short projects, like Chernobyl, this mini-series broadcast in 2019 which plunges us into the heart of the nuclear disaster of 1986. Created by Craig Mazin, to whom we owe more recently the adaptation of The Last of Us, Chernobyl manages to leave an indelible mark in just five episodes.
At the heart of the drama
Captivating from start to finish, Chernobyl returns, as its name suggests, to the events that occurred before, during and after the 1986 nuclear accident which affected the VI Lenin power plant in Ukraine, a few kilometers from the town of Prypiat. During its five episodes, the series highlights the fate of the employees of the plant, the inhabitants of Prypiat, but also the management of the crisis by the Soviet government and the impact of the disaster on the rest of the world. In 2019 when it was broadcast, the series was unanimous: Chernobyl now has an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, with 95% awarded by the press and 97% by spectators. The program is praised for its realism, its staging, but also for its desire to tell the story of the people directly impacted at the time. In short, Chernobyl is a total television hit, a series to watch in one go that has no reason to be ashamed of the biggest Hollywood productions.
