Star Wars 10, 11 and 12? Lucasfilm is working on a new trilogy

After five years of absence from the cinema, but an increased presence on Disney +, the license Star Wars is about to return to the big screen. Lucasfilm has given itself the time to prepare for the future of its very distant galaxy, to find new stories to tell in the eternal struggle of the forces of good against those of evil. Three films were made official in 2023 during the Celebration, all with no apparent connection to the antagonists Darth Vader and Palpatine. The continuation of the adventures of Grogu and Din Djarin, Rey who founded a New Jedi Order or even a story evolving thousands of years before the birth of Anakin Skywalker, the saga seemed to have a lot of work on its plate. According to Deadlinethese three projects will not be the only ones to invade our screens in the coming years. If Star Wars seemed finished with the Skywalker sagastarted in 1977 with A New Hope and which concluded with L’Ascension de Skywalker in 2019, Kathleen Kennedy finally decided to linger a little more on this period.

The head of Lucasfilm has just reached an agreement with Simon Kinberg to produce three new films. The one who co-created Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni would also be responsible for writing this new trilogy. According to certain sources interviewed by Deadlineit could be the episodes X, XI and XII. Other insiders contest this idea, instead evoking completely new stories in line with the films of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold and Jon Favreau. Lucasfilm and Disney declined to comment. undoubtedly preferring to make the announcement sacred in 2025 with the return of the Star Wars Celebration. It must be said that the firm is groping its way forward, these recent proposals on the small screen have not all been welcomed with open arms by early fans.

A beautiful mess

Projects on fire, the saga Star Wars don’t miss it. Since Palpatine was defeated — hopefully once and for all — many films have been discussed by Lucasfilm or directors approached to continue the journey. In addition to the three films promised in 2023, we are still waiting to hear news about the project dedicated to Lando Calrissian and led by Donald Glover, the trilogy promised to Rian Johnson or even the proposal from Taika Waititi. Since 2019, a number of films have also been simply abandoned. This is the case of the one produced by Kevin Feige or that of the creators of Game of Thrones : David Benioff and DB Weiss. To tell the truth, even among projects whose process is underway, the future is uncertain. Recently, New Jedi Order lost his screenwriter. Steven Knight has jumped ship, putting paid to plans for Rey Skywalker’s imminent return to our screens. James Mangold’s proposal is particularly discreet, The Mandalorian and Grogu should be released in May 2026. As this deadline approaches, Lucasfilm obviously no longer knows where to turn, and that’s not particularly reassuring.

Star Wars films announced or discussed

  • The Mandalorian & Grogu (Jon Favreau) – May 20, 2026
  • New Jedi Order (Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy) – date undetermined
  • Dawn of the Jedi (James Mangold) – date undetermined (expected for December 2026 with filming starting in 2025)
  • Lando Calrissian – date undetermined
  • Rian Johnson trilogy – announced in 2018, but no news since
  • Kevin Feige film – canceled
  • Taika Waititi film – status undetermined
  • Film by David Benioff and DB Weiss – canceled

For Disney and Lucasfilm, however, the stakes are colossal. Star Wars is a license that is working miracles at the global box office, despite a review that is sometimes less enthusiastic than expected. If the last trilogy is far from having been unanimously appreciated by fans, it can pride itself on having brought together $4.3 billion just with The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi et L’Ascension de Skywalker. At the end of a complicated year for Disney in the cinema, the saga is among the priorities of the big-eared firm. Unsurprisingly, the studio is largely turning to its most popular brands to generate revenue, Star Wars is one of them. Will the public manage to forget the recent narrative wanderings on Disney+? Nothing is less certain.
