American television stars returned to the air this Wednesday, November 6 for their daily shows. They reacted strongly to Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election the day before.
American talk shows are preparing for four more years of Donald Trump's presidency. On the evening of Wednesday, November 6, the presenters of these ultra-popular programs across the Atlantic expressed their disappointment the day after the victory of the Republican candidate, elected 47th President of the United States against Democrat Kamala Harris.
Starting with Jimmy Kimmel who, during the opening monologue of his show Jimmy Kimmel Live! couldn't hold back her tears:
“(Election night) was a terrible night for the women, the children, the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who work hard and keep this country going,” he said first before taking a break. , sobs in his voice.
“For the health system, for our climate, for science, for journalism, for justice, for freedom of expression,” he continued.
“It was a terrible evening for the poor, the middle class, the elderly who depend on pension funds, for our allies in Ukraine, for NATO, for democracy and decency. It was a terrible evening for everyone who voted against him, and you know what? It was a bad night for everyone who voted for him, too.
“I don’t believe Donald Trump is a good person”
Seth Meyers, another figure of American second parties thanks to his show Late Night with Seth Meyersfor his part, chose the register of acid humor to comment on this return of Donald Trump to the White House after his first term between 2017 and 2021:
“Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election, and he's going to be president again for four years, or eight, or twelve (…) We live in an infinite time loop where Donald Trump has always been and always will be the center of the world. There is no escape.”
He also focused on the unfailing support of billionaire Elon Musk, owner among others of the platform most powerful man in the world for the second time, and they will combine their influences on society and the economy. They are not your friends.
“I don’t believe Donald Trump is a good person,” he concluded. “I would even go so far as to say he's a bad person (…) but half the country thinks he's a good person, or they don't care because they don't care. I think he's a good president.”
“Here we go again”
Finally, Stephen Colbert began his speech by ignoring American modesty regarding foul language: “And come on, p*****. Here we go again.”
“The shock is deep, the feeling of having lost something enormous. All day yesterday, I proudly wore my 'I voted' sticker. Today, I wore my 'I question my confidence' sticker towards man's capacity to do good.'
“It’s a democracy, and the majority has spoken,” he continued. “And she said she didn’t care much about democracy.”
If all these figures of American television share the same disappointment and the same anxiety for the future, Jimmy Kimmel nevertheless ended his speech on a note of hope:
“We had the choice between a prosecutor and a criminal, and we chose the criminal to become president of the United States (…) But I also think that maybe, when we look back, we will say that “We needed this to wake us up. Maybe the people who put Donald Trump on a pedestal need to find out how much he doesn't care about them.”
