Portraiture, a long artistic tradition

These many paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, engravings, works of art…show the diversity of portraiture, stemming from a long tradition until the February 24, 2025.

Attested since Antiquity, this artistic genre has experienced tremendous development until today.

Over the centuries, artists have been able to respond to a growing demand from wealthy sponsors keen to showcase their image, in the form of individual or group portraits.

Mainly reserved for an elite, portraits diversified and became more popular in the 19th century, with the emergence of a new bourgeoisie and the appearance of photography.
