Over 450 m2the exhibition brings together more than 160 works removed from reservesand for some, specially restored on the occasion with the support of the Drac Center Val de Loire. This exhibition offers to rediscover the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts of Tours under the angle of the portrait, apprehended in all its forms.
Portraiture, a long artistic tradition
These many paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, engravings, works of art…show the diversity of portraiture, stemming from a long tradition until the February 24, 2025.
Attested since Antiquity, this artistic genre has experienced tremendous development until today.
Over the centuries, artists have been able to respond to a growing demand from wealthy sponsors keen to showcase their image, in the form of individual or group portraits.
Mainly reserved for an elite, portraits diversified and became more popular in the 19th century, with the emergence of a new bourgeoisie and the appearance of photography.
The exhibition will present in counterpoint some works from the Center Pompidou. Loaned as part of the AR (t]CHIPEL festival, organized by the Center – Val de Loire Region, they shed light on contemporary issues around gender and gender identity and sexual orientation.
Finally, it will also present several mediation devices to support families and the public in a fun scenography, and will be accompanied by a rich cultural program.
