A torn America, a faltering democracy

Consequently, the memory of these riots worries there, as well as here. The violence of the electoral campaign which is ending has reached an unprecedented level: a barrage of insults, outright lies, physical threats, sexist and racist remarks, and even… several attempted attacks. Spectacularly, Donald Trump narrowly escaped being shot. A supporter of the Republican candidate died, and two others were seriously injured.

Tensions and concerns in the ranks of Donald Trump: “On reading these revelations, he was livid”

The specter of new violence resurfaces at the beginning of November. The American capital was therefore barricaded. Elsewhere in the swing states, snipers and soldiers protected certain polling stations and counting centers. Even before the opening of the polling stations and the publication of the first results, Donald Trump was already denouncing massive cheating in the registrations. His team prepared to contest the vote if it did not turn to their advantage. Not surprising given the number of Trump supporters who make no secret of preparing for a second civil war. The trivialization of violence is carried out by those who claim to defend the fundamental freedoms of Americans, where their Democratic opponents believe they are protecting democracy.

Distrust of the federal state continues to grow in the face of heavy inflation, failures of the health system, widely contested immigration and rising inequalities. More than ever, America is torn between two incompatible political visions, opposing social projects and opposing interests. Extreme polarization, fueled by an authoritarian and elusive Donald Trump, will not end with the outcome of the election. The entire American project is now in danger from within.
