Years of Culture: Designer Mohamed Benchellal at the Qatar Museum

Presented at the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ), the exhibition highlights a new collection of haute couture dresses created and produced during Benchellal’s artistic residency at Liwan Design Studios and Labs, inspired by the Qatari landscape. This exhibition celebrates Benchellal’s know-how, its innovative designs and its commitment to sustainable and responsible fashion.

Visible from 1is November 2024 to January 18, 2025 in Gallery 13 at NMoQ, the exhibition presents Benchellal’s couture creations as monumental works, carefully juxtaposed with the architectural wonders of Qatar that inspired them.

Known for its exceptional drape and use of sustainable materials, Benchellal offers clothing reflecting the harmony between craftsmanship and environmental responsibility. In addition to Benchellal’s haute couture collection, the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) is partnering with M7 to showcase the historical and contemporary connections between Qatari and Moroccan cultures through fashion, with a focus on methods sustainably made. The pieces on display will illustrate the evolution of sustainable design, in line with Benchellal’s commitment to zero waste techniques.

Highlights include a traditional wool daffah (cape) adorned with hand-embroidered Zari motifs, from the NMoQ collection. Furthermore, M7 will collaborate with Qatari designer Mashael Al Naimi, founder of the Mhefhef brand, to reinterpret the Bisht in a modern context, by creating a hand-woven Tusar silk abaya, inspired by the architectural beauty of the Gate of the Kasbah.
