Tom Cruise, famous for his attraction to action, is reportedly planning to direct a sequel to the film “Days of Thunder,” released in 1990.
A promising sequel? More than three decades after starring in “Days of Thunder,” Tom Cruise is reportedly in talks with Paramount Pictures to reprise his role as Cole Trickle in a sequel to the racing film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“He talks about ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Days of Thunder.’ This is what will come together first in terms of storyline. I don’t think the sequel to “Days of Thunder” is a bad idea,” a source close to the actor told the American media.
As a reminder, the original film was not a box office success upon its release, with only $157 million generated, for a production budget of $60 million. Furthermore, it had received mixed reviews from the audience. A reboot had already been considered in the form of a television series by Paramount+, but Tom Cruise had rejected the idea.
A return to the screen of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
As details regarding this potential project are confidential, there is no information confirming that the Hollywood star’s ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, who played Dr. Claire Lewicki, will reprise her role. The couple met while filming in 1989, and began a relationship which led to their marriage, before their divorce in 2001.
Given rumors that the actor avoided the Oscars in 2023 to avoid an “awkward meeting” with his ex-partner, according to the Daily Mail, a return for the actress seems unlikely.
Known for its thrilling scenes and memorable soundtrack, “Days of Thunder” stars Tom Cruise as Cole Trickle, an ambitious stock car driver who joins NASCAR and must overcome personal and professional obstacles. This character helped cement his status as an action movie star, after “Top Gun.”
The celebrity is gearing up to star in a new Alejandro G. Iñárritu film for Warner Bros and Legendary, but no details have been revealed. In addition, he has just finished filming the 8th part of “Mission Impossible”, which will be released in theaters on May 21, 2025.
