the essential
After ten years of mixing at parties and festivals across Europe, Boris Van Hoylandt decided to return to Loubressac to open a cocktail bar in the old family barn. After a successful summer season, the former DJ has no shortage of projects.
“Once upon a time there was a small village with its very quiet inhabitants. A village with its farmers. Its mechanic. Its grocer: “nothing ever happens here”.” For those who don’t have the reference, this is the introduction to the trailer for the film “A Few Gentlemen Too Quiet” directed by Georges Lautner, released in 1973. The poster for the film, which takes place in Loubressac, is exhibited in the barn that Boris Van Hoylandt has been completely renovating for almost four years. “Miou Miou, who plays in the film, came to this barn which then belonged to my grandparents. She climbed on a calf” says the thirty-year-old. This native of the country, after a life as a DJ, decided to put down his mixer and headphones to transform the same barn into a cocktail bar bringing new life to the town.
From Bristol to Moscow, 10 years of mixing in Europe
Boris Van Hoylandt, 35, is preparing for the last evening which marks the end of the season. “I’m going to remix on this occasion, we’re expecting around a hundred people dressed up for this Halloween evening.” A way for him to reconnect with his past life and to thank the loyalty of his customers. “We had an incredible season with a lot of attendance this summer. What pleases me is that our clientele is essentially local. They appreciate this place for its conviviality with our menu which offers a wide range of Belgian beers, a large number of different cocktails and a good musical atmosphere.” Boris fell into the world of music very young. “At 18, I was already mixing at parties in the Lot and in Toulouse. Then I left for England. There, I quickly met producers and DJs. Very quickly, I started producing my own sounds of Dubstep, Trap.” An underground universe which will allow him to perform in England. “With a friend, we made a song which was broadcast on the BBC on the show by Diplo & Friends, one of the greatest American DJs” remembers Boris. Then the dates followed one another throughout Europe. Ranging from Belgian festivals to private clubs in Moscow.
The family barn comes back to life to the rhythm of convivial evenings
After ten years on the decks, the onset of COVID stopped the hectic pace of the evenings. “I then returned to France” explains Boris. “Finally, this period allowed me to realize the project I had in mind with this family barn. There is a time for everything. I was fed up with this lifestyle.” Alone, he then began to renovate the barn. First with the aim of making it a house then a bar. “It was my girlfriend at the time who encouraged me in this path” continues Boris. “My goal was to create a different place, the inspiration for which was the result of my travels. My friendly entourage didn’t really believe in it at first. But I had no other options, I went for it!” Without communication, word of mouth spread quickly. “What pleases me is that this place has changed things in the village. It has reconnected people who no longer went out or who no longer spoke to each other.” While retaining the rustic exterior of the family barn, Boris designed a modern interior decoration with a breathtaking panorama of the village and the valley. Driven by this dynamic, Boris will create new outdoor spaces during the winter before reopening LaGrange next April. With music still in his skin, he is already thinking about developing an eclectic musical program for the second season. “If Loubressac is not Kathmandu” says Michel Galabru, the village offers with the Grange de Boris a place of conviviality which is really worth the trip.
