If it can make a difference in financial terms, the support of Hollywood stars for the contenders for the White House is not likely to change much during the American presidential election, believes an analyst.
“It makes a difference in terms of money, because Hollywood is rich and it’s a way for Democrats to collect it over time. They managed to raise colossal sums,” Stéphane Bureau told TVA Nouvelles on Thursday evening.
In this case, the “star system” seems to benefit Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who has recently garnered the support of celebrities like Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Lopez and basketball legend LeBron James.
“What we can say with certainty is that over time, the Democratic constellation is often populated by Hollywood stars,” admitted the political analyst, citing the example of the Democratic Party convention in Chicago last August.
On the other hand, this eagerness to line up behind the American presidential candidates has its downside and can play many tricks on celebrities, as is the case of George Clooney, who asked President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race.
Mr. Bureau summons history to evoke this Democratic tradition of uniting the support of Hollywood stars, citing the episode of President John F. Kennedy, the administration of Bill Clinton or even that of his wife, Hillary Clinton, ex -democratic candidate supported in 2016 by 169 big stars.
On the Republican side, the candidates tend less towards the support of stars than their Democratic opponents, but a candidate from the Hollywood world, former President Ronald Reagan, was particularly popular in his time, observed Mr. Bureau.
