Head to Ireland for Halloween

Who, contrary to what one might think, was not born in the United States. But in Ireland on the Ancient Lands, 2500 years ago. At the time, pumpkins were not used as lanterns, turnips were. I’m preparing a new Europe 1 travel podcast for you Special Halloween in Ireland to discover all these little stories, the legendary sites and the essential festivals to celebrate Halloween. Like the Puca Festival in County Meath to follow in the original footsteps of the Sowin Festival, “the end of summer” in Gaelic. And yes, the Celts already wore masks and animal skins to scare away evil spirits – when the world of the living met the world of the dead on October 31 – and then the Derry carnival, in the north of the island, my favorite!

For what ?

Every year, it is the largest costume parade in Europe. Very festive and that’s down to the location: Derry is a small fortified town, its ramparts are 6 m high. Which creates quite a magical atmosphere: a film set. The whole town plays the game for 4 days. The Irish prepare their decorations and costumes weeks in advance for “Parade of Horrors.” And you also have to disguise yourself, otherwise we won’t serve you a drink! Then there are pop-up shops if you forgot your skeleton on the plane! FYI: There are direct flights from to Derry with easyJet.

And besides the parade, what are they organizing?

… all kinds of circuits, like the “Awakening the Walled City Trail”, freacky visits with the Château Le Fear, the House of Horrors, which was built on an old cemetery, you have to be over 14 to enter. A Gothic ball in an old church, screenings of scary films, ghost hunts, fireworks, live music concerts…And then very good traditional dishes like Colcannon made with mashed potatoes , kale and onions watch out…be careful something is hidden inside.
