That’s it, Animal Well is present on all consoles (as well as PC)! Yesterday, during its Xbox Partner Preview, Microsoft announced the arrival of the title on Xbox Series X|S. It is offered at the price of 20,49 €.

Animal Well is the work of one and the same person: Billy Basso, who had been working on it since 2017. The developer was helped by Dan Adelman, a former Xbox and Nintendo veteran, who was in charge of the business and marketing side. The software is considered by many players as “the revelation of the year”. The latter also participates in the Golden Joystick Awards in the categories “Best PC Game of the Year” and “Best Indie Game”. The ceremony will take place this November 21. It’s also very likely that we’ll hear about it at the Game Awards.

Very intriguing gameplay

Animal Well is apparently very simplistic: it looks like a simple metroidvania with pixel art creepy. During an interview at IGNBilly Basso explains: “Animal Well is that kind of game that doesn’t really communicate well why or how it’s special (…) It’s a game with secrets and hidden information, and I think that’s what makes it interesting to play, but it’s hard to sell it like that, I can’t just show the best moments”.

Beyond its form, the substance of the game is so neat that it is impossible to say that it is not exceptional. Playing Animal Well for the first time can be confusing, however, as the player is given no guidance on controls or quests. But, after learning to control the “Jumping Bean” that you play as, you understand that you will have to solve puzzles to unlock areas or objects such as a flute or a frisbee. These “Tools” will also allow you to reach previously inaccessible spaces. Be careful! The fauna and flora of this pixelated environment is full of creatures, not always convenient.

As you progress through the adventure, you delve deeper into the lore of Animal Well. That is to say, there are several “Layers”. On several occasions, we may think that the story is over, when it is not! If the difficulty increases, don’t panic.
