This is the long-awaited event for cinema lovers in Lyon. The unmissable Lumière festival opened this Saturday, October 12. 5,000 spectators gathered for the opening night of the 2024 edition, which runs until October 20.

The start of the event was given with the projection d’A Revenantby Christian-Jaque. A cinematic gem in black and white, shot in 1946 in post-war Lyon with actor Louis Jouvet, and dialogues by Henri Jeanson. The cream of French cinema of the time.

In the film, the viewer feels like the character played by Louis Jouvet: the city of Lyon is unrecognizable, while appearing familiar.

The film begins in an extremely foggy atmosphere, which is something we knew until the 80s but which exists much less than before. There are plans of the slopes of the Rousse, the Place Antoine Vollon, the traboules, the quays… The people of Lyon will recognize everything while being struck by the change” exposes Maëlle Arnaud, the programmer of the Lumière festival.

First film shot in Lyon after the Second World War, A Revenant is also the symbol of a rediscovered French cinema, as Maëlle Arnaud underlines: “this is the first time that Louis Jouvet returns to the screens after his exile during the war, these are dialogues by Henri Jeanson, one of the greatest dialogue writers of French cinema. Films like this will be important in relaunching the very particular spirit of French cinema.”.

Presented in competition at the very first Film Festival, A Revenant is inspired by a sordid news item that occurred among the upper bourgeoisie of Lyon in the 1920s, the Gillet affair. The film received excellent reviews everywhere at the time… except in Lyon.

We are among the silkies, it is a particular vision of Lyon of those years, with little arrangements, little shenanigans. If the Lyonnais of the time were a little upset at the idea of being depicted in this way, the Lyonnais of today will rejoice at this somewhat acerbic painting. says the programmer of the Lumière festival.
