A gigantic fresco is being born on the facade of the Jura wood school in Delémont. The Vaudois artist LPVDA is at work. Since Monday he has been sanding the material to reveal his drawing which will be spread over the 90 square meters of the building’s facade. This project is the initiative of the Jura Association of carpentry, cabinetmaking and joinery companies (AJECEM).
For almost a month, the Leysin artist Antoine Guignard, aka LPVDA, will work on the facade of the school. The technique he uses he calls “street poncing”. It is a working method that resembles that of the scratch card, where the artist removes material to bring in light, unlike traditional drawing. “I have an ecological paint which is not a paint,” smiles the artist. I work with old wood. The more I sand the wood, the more light I add. » Still at the sketch stage, Antoine Guignard uses sandpaper, then he will use a sander for the final rendering which will be spread over the entire south facade of the school.
Art to showcase craftsmanship
The artist chose to represent children in the form of an anamorphosis. Viewed from a certain angle, the mural will appear three-dimensional. It will represent two children “building the school” from the inside. The theme chosen by LPVDA fits the place, since it houses apprentice cabinetmakers, carpenters and joiners. “We don’t talk much about the artistic aspect of woodworking professions,” Stéphane Willemin, president of the training commission for AJECEM and instigator of the project, told us. It is also a way to showcase craftsmanship. » Apprentices are also involved in the project. They notably created the miniature model of the school, which served as a sketch for the artist. Others are responsible for leading the communication campaign around the project. “It’s not just a beautiful decorative facade,” explains Stéphane Willemin. This project is also educational. It was important to us. »
Antoine Guignard’s fresco should be finished at the end of October, before being officially inaugurated. /tna
