“In my kingdom, we don’t need a prince charming, we free ourselves.” Nicky Doll on stage at the Zénith in

While Drag Race has just started its third tour in France, the show is stopping at the Zénith in this Tuesday evening. A few hours before being reunited with the public, we interviewed the queen of queens, the one who hosts the reality show broadcast on France 2 since 2022, Nicky Doll.

“I warned the cast, I told them to be careful, you are not ready because in Nantes, we really feel the love of people, it stamps with its feet, it screams, it’s hyper participatory as an audience”.

In a little less than 4 hours, Nicky Doll will be on stage with the 10 queens from season 3 of Drag Race France. The tour started two weeks ago, but already the queens are hooked.

There is a great atmosphere, raconte Nicky Doll. The queens are super happy to experience this surge of love. I normalized it because I’m used to being on stage, but it’s true that when you leave the show, you leave the stress of competition. Now they just have to be what they are best, performers.”

This year, the Drag Rave show was designed around the theme “Tales and legends”.

The new show was imagined around the theme “Tales and legends”. “We wanted to energize the thing a little, and we said to ourselves that it would not be bad to have a slightly magical side, explique Nicky Doll. Because drag is still something magical.” Glitter, laughter, dance, performances, and always behind it, a political message.

Drag is always political.

Tackling tales and legends means trying to deconstruct certain ideas of patriarchy. “DIn my kingdom for example, we don’t need a prince charming, we free ourselves. The goal of drag is that when we come home from this show, we still continue to think beyond the glitter, beyond the glamour.”

In 2022, when producer Raphaël Cioffi asked Nicky Doll to host the show Drag Race (which had already existed in the United States since 2009) in France, she thought the country was not ready. Two years later, his speech has evolved a lot.

“Not only was France ready, but the French are hyper chauvinistic, they are hyper proud of their Drag Race France franchise. It’s not just the LGBTQIA+ community, everyone, allies, all generations, feel included , feel comfortable, feel at home, and are proud of their drag queens and it shows from the front row to the back row.”

For Nicky Doll, whose real name is Karl Sanchez, the Drag Race adventure is an opportunity for the new generation. The show is recommended for ages 10 and up.

“Future generations are educating themselves now. Children, when they come to see us, they mainly see Disney princesses. But it allows them, for those who may not necessarily fit into the somewhat classic mold of society, to say to themselves that I have my place too And it will also allow them to be tolerant with the next people they will see in their school or elsewhere.

The Drag Race France tour runs until December 14. And it’s this evening, Tuesday October 8 at the Zénith de Saint-Herblain from 8 p.m.
