artists on strike to defend a theater from “pressures” from town hall RN

The CGT Spectacle and the collective are demanding guarantees on the financing of the establishment and the maintenance of its director.

Actors and technicians who were to perform at the L’Escapade theater in Hénin-Beaumont announced they would strike from Thursday evening, in response to a call from the CGT Spectacle, which denounced interference by the RN town hall in the management of the place. « The temporary workers of our company are going to go on strike. They will be present and will hold a picket to inform the public »Camille told AFP (she did not wish to give her name), actress member of the collective «l’Intruse» which was to occur on Thursday, as well as a collective of workers mobilized for the defense of this theater.

Denouncing “interference” et “wage pressures” on the part of the town hall led since 2014 by Steeve Briois, of the National Rally, the CGT Spectacle called for an unlimited strike at the L’Escapade theater. These pressures lead, according to those involved, to a situation of understaffing to run the establishment. In addition to maintaining funding, the CGT Spectacle and this collective are demanding guarantees so that the director of L’Escapade, on sick leave since August, can carry out his mission.

Convention and pressures

They also denounce the signing of a new agreement between the president of the theater association and the RN town hall – without the approval of the board of directors and the director -, providing that the municipality “can resume management of the place with 60 days’ notice”indicated Maxime Séchaud, deputy general secretary of the CGT Spectacle.

On September 25, these workers, also supported by the National Union of Living Arts (Synavi), spoke at the launch of the season. The CGT spectacle had denounced a desire of the town hall to “get your hands on this independent place of culture”.

The leader of the RN majority in the municipal council and senator from Pas-de- Christopher Szczurek defended himself from any pressure. “We never imposed anything”assured the elected official interviewed by AFP, adding that the subsidy of around 300,000 euros paid to the theater had always been renewed since 2014. According to the CGT Spectacle, the Escapade welcomes around a hundred artists and technicians each year , most of them intermittent.
