When you no longer know what to watch on an SVOD service, sometimes you shouldn’t hesitate to go back in time a little. On Disney+, for example, we can find an absolutely exceptional adventure film dating from 1954 without which Pirates of the Caribbean would never have seen the light of day.

One of the greatest adventure films of the last century is on Disney+

When we think of the films produced by Disneywe tend to only talk about animated classics like Snow White, The Lion King or The Snow Queen. Some may even go so far as to cite a few films produced by Pixar as Toy Story or Finding Nemo since Mickey’s firm bought this studio a while ago now, but many forget that Disney is also behind some of the world’s most famous adventure films. Among them, we find for example 20,000 Leagues Under the Seaa true monument of cinema.

In case this name doesn’t mean anything to you, it is obviously the film adaptation of the eponymous novel by Jules Verne. Directed by Richard Fleischerthis feature film was released in 1954 and is today considered one of the greatest adventure films of all time. This is also the first major production from the Disney studios to be carried out using live action, a real risk-taking that they don’t take much of anymore and which paid off. Because in addition to being excellent, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is also a global success and continues to inspire many films even today. If you’ve never seen it and you’re not afraid to go back in time a little (the film has still aged well for a 70-year-old feature film), it is currently available on Disney+.

Without him, there would have been no Pirates of the Caribbean

When talking about the films that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea inspired several decades after its creation, it would be impossible not to mention Pirates of the Caribbean. Indeed, if you are a fan of the adventures of Jack Sparrow, you might well want to watch Richard Fleischer’s film as the latter is at the origin of the saga. At the time of production of the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, Disney was no longer making many live-action films, and executives had difficulty getting excited about a project as special as that of the pirate film. In order to convince them, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer did not hesitate to remind them that Disney had made its reputation in part thanks to adventure films like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

But if we can already see some similarities between the first Pirates of the Caribbean and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, it is especially the second film in the saga which has started to make real direct references. For example, we could cite the character of Davy Jonesvery inspired by both Captain Nemo and all the imagery around the kraken already present in the adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel, but also the scene where Jack Sparrow flees the cannibals which is very reminiscent of the one where the crew of the Nautilus flees from a hostile island people. We won’t tell you more, but if you liked Pirates of the Caribbean, you better give this classic adventure film a chance!
