: a photo installation visible on the future Fondation Cartier located near the Louvre

The Fondation Cartier is celebrating its 40th anniversary! To mark the occasion, the famous museum dedicated to contemporary art is unveiling a photographic installation visible on the bay windows of its future spaces located on the Place du Palais-Royal in . It features Patti Smith, Lou Reed and Agnès Varda, among others… All prestigious artists with whom the Fondation Cartier has had the opportunity to work over the past four decades.

If you have recently crossed the Palais-Royal Square in Paris, then this detail has surely not escaped you. Work surrounds the front and back of the former shopping center of Louvre of Antiquaries located on this famous square. This exceptional heritage site dating from the 19th century, located a stone’s throw from the Louvre, will soon house the new spaces of the Cartier FoundationThe design of this new place was entrusted to John Newalready at the origin of the famous glass and metal building located in the 14th. These new spaces of the Fondation Cartier should open their doors to the public at the end of 2025, according to Vogue .

If the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art has been established in the 14th arrondissement since May 1994. The famous cultural venue was inaugurated on October 20, 1984 in Jouy-en-Josas, in the . 2024 therefore marks the 40th anniversary of the Cartier Foundation !

On the occasion of this anniversary, the Cartier Foundation imagined a installation visible on the large bay windows of its new spaces located in the 1st arrondissement in Paris. To be admired on the facades overlooking the streets of Rivoli and Saint-Honoré, these large photographic portraits honor artists with whom the Fondation Cartier has had the opportunity to work. There are for example Patti SmithThe legendary New York artist visited the 14th arrondissement in 2014 for the 30th anniversary of the Fondation Cartier. She gave a series of performances there, including the one with John Cale that we were lucky enough to attend.

The face of Lou Reed also appears on the façade of the future Fondation Cartier. The legendary singer and musician gave an exclusive concert with his unmissable group The Velvet Underground in 1990 on the site then located in Jouy-en-Josas. On these 7-meter-high bay windows, we can also find the portrait of the filmmaker and photographer Agnes Vardapresent at a Nomade evening in 2013.

Other personalities visible during this installation? The French architect John Newthe Brazilian photographer and activist Claudia Andujarthe filmmaker and actor Takeshi Kitanothe artist Sheroanawe Hakihiiwethe director Marie Losier or the Australian sculptor Ron MueckIn the end, there are around thirty artists whose portraits are displayed on the façade of the future Fondation Cartier, located a stone’s throw from the Louvre.

Reflecting the way in which the Fondation Cartier has developed its programming for 40 years, the artists represented in this installation come from all disciplines — from painting to cinema, including architecture, music, fashion, photography, philosophy and even live performance —, from all generations and all geographies. ” explains the Cartier Foundation on its website.

In addition, the cultural venue is also launching a series of six podcasts which traces its history. Entitled “ See coming, Come see “, this series has been available on all listening platforms since September 17.

While waiting for the opening of the Cartier Foundation on the Place du Palais-Royal, the Fondation Cartier located in the 14th arrondissement invites you from October 12, 2024 to March 16, 2025 to discover the exhibition dedicated to Olga de Amaral.
