Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne are three sisters at their dying father’s bedside in the film. His three daughters.

They couldn’t be more different. Katie (Carrie Coon) is the eldest. Bossy, almost surly, she takes charge of everything. Christina (Elizabeth Olsen), the youngest, is her complete opposite. Almost excessively gentle, she practices yoga and avoids confrontations. Then there’s Rachel (Natasha Lyonne). She lives in her father’s apartment, smokes, spends her time betting on sports and watching horse races or football matches.

Between the three sisters, the three girls of the title, masterfully played by these three formidable actresses, relations are tense from the beginning of Azazel Jacobs’ feature film. Their father (Jay O. Sanders), seriously ill, will probably die in a few days as the two palliative care nurses tell the sisters.

Everything is therefore a pretext for quarrels in this serious hour when emotions take over. The dialogues are surprisingly familiar – what family has not experienced similar disputes, whether over cigarette smoke or the last wishes of a loved one? – the situations explored resemble those of every day.

Truthfulness and emotion are therefore the main qualities of His three daughters, that explores the grieving process with accuracy and modesty. And far from being dark or depressing, the film manages to have a lasting impact by focusing on how the loss of a loved one brings out the most beautiful thing in us: love.
