In 2024, a Greek airport has been awarded the sad title of the worst in Europe, according to travelers’ reviews. Find out why it is so maligned and which other airports are in this unenviable ranking.

Some European airports make you want to take to the skies… and others make you want to stay on solid ground. Because on the Old Continent, some sites go off-piste. Long waiting times, frequent delays and cancellations, uncomfortable waiting areas and poor information about flights put travelers’ nerves to the test.

The Humberto Delgado site in Lisbon was considered the worst airport in the world in 2019 by the German company AirHelp. More recently, Grenoble was named the French airport most prone to flight delays and cancellations, according to the same firm*.

Heraklion airport to be worst in Europe by 2024

And this year, it’s one Cretan airport that’s particularly disappointing: Heraklion, Greece. According to an analysis conducted by Holidu based on reviews left on Google Maps in 2024, Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport is rated 2.6/5 on average by 21,202 reviews. According to our research, it’s even rated 1.5/5 on TripAdvisor.

Bordeaux-Mérignac, which wore the dunce’s cap last year, is now on the second step of the podium of poor performers (2.8/5), ahead of Manchester airport (3.1/5).
