Actor James Darren, star of 1950s romantic comedies, dies at 88

The actor, who rose to fame in film in the 1950s before turning to music, was a close friend of Nancy Sinatra, who announced his death.

Actor James Darren, who starred in several romantic comedies in the 1950s, has died at the age of 88, singer Nancy Sinatra, who was one of his closest friends, has announced, Deadline magazine reports.

“One of my closest and dearest friends has passed away,” Nancy Sinatra wrote on Instagram. “He was my daughter’s godfather. I wish her a beautiful and speedy journey through the universe and beyond. Safe travels, my sweet Jimmy.”

James Darren died in Los Angeles at Cedars-Sinai Hospital after being placed in the cardiac intensive care unit. He was too weak to undergo surgery and died in his sleep, according to Deadline.

Handsome sportsman

Born in 1936 in Philadelphia, James Darren became known for playing between 1959 and 1963 in Gidgeta series of three romantic comedies set against a backdrop of surfing and exoticism in which he plays a handsome sportsman.

Alongside cinema, James Darren had been a singer in the mid-1960s and had achieved some success with hits such as Goodbye Cruel World et Goodbye Cruel World.

In cinema, he also appeared in the famous war film The Guns of Navarone. On television, he had also made appearances in Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210 et Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the 1990s.
